American Curl Picture

This is a beautiful American Curl picture by the celebrated American cat photographer, Helmi Flick. Please respect her copyright. The American curl is a purebred cat of moderate appearance except for the ears, which curl backwards. This cat is neither cobby nor foreign. Any color or patten is acceptable by TICA and you will see long and short haired American Curls. For me this is a cat of regular appearance except for one part of the cat's anatomy.

The cat in the picture seems to have a dark tabby and white coat. At birth the ears are straight and then at about 2-10 days old they start to curl. There are rules on how to assess the degree of ear curl. They have to curl just right at 90-180 degrees of curl - but not touching the head or back of the ear - for the cat to be a show cat otherwise the cat becomes someone's pet or a breeding cat perhaps. This is an intelligent cat that likes being with her/his human companion. See another American Curl cat picture. Now see a gorgeous white American Curl in Japan. See also a full page on this cat.

Cheetah spots vs leopard spots

This is comparison picture of cheetah spots vs leopard spots. You can see that the cheetah spots are solid and regular in shape. In between the main spots are smaller spots and faint lines; whereas the leopard has rosettes. They are irregular in shape and the center is a different colour to the general background color. These spots could also be called donuts (American English) or doughnuts (English) as they have a center although the ring of dark fur is broken and irregular.

How fast can lions run?

ANSWER: Lions can reach a top speed of 48 to 59 kilometers per hour. That is 30 to 37 miles per hour (mph).  Lions are said to have poor stamina. They puff and pant after a fast run over 100 yards. The lion has longer limbs in relation to overall size than the tiger but it is not a specialist runner. The lion's limbs are more a weapon than as a means of transport!

At top speed and with a flying start the lion would run the 100 yards in 5.5 seconds. From a standing start the cheetah can run the 100 yards in about 6 seconds.

The speed of the lion was assessed by George Beals Schalle, an American naturalist born 1933.

American Bobtail Picture

Please respect Helmi Flick's rights as she makes a living from photographing cats. This is a fine example of this breed and of cat photography. The American Bobtail cat should have a wild cat look and have the general appearance of an American bobcat. This cat is called "Hershey" and he certainly passes that test. He is a spotted tabby. The tail should be about 1.5 inches to 6 inches in length. This cat breed can be seen in short and long hair. This a strong and rather large cat. The muzzle should be somewhat square but not foreshortened. The American Bobtail is an easy-to-live-with cat. Read and see more on this breed on this page.

Picture of Ashera GD

The Ashera GD is the top flight hypoallergenic cat at Lifestyle Pets Inc. (Allerca Cats). This cat is said to be an Savannah F1 (first filial - one generation removed from the serval), which is also said by a very reliable source to be hypoallergenic. That is how Lifestyle Pets Inc. can claim that this cat is hypoallergenic. Hypoallergenic in practical terms means a cat that is less likely to cause an allergic reaction in a person.

This cat has an identical appearance to the F1 Savannah cat. In short, this is a very large cat at about 25lbs and more (the former world's tallest domestic cat was Magic, an F1 Savannah). The father would be a serval. The serval is a medium sized wild cat with the longest limb length to body size of all the cats. As a result the Ashera has long limbs! This is a rangy, lanky cat with a very strong ability to jump. The Ashera is not formally a cat breed, however. The photo is copyright Lifestyle Pets Inc. and reproduced with their permission. Please respect copyright. Read more about the Allerca cats on this page. They have a range cats.

Using Wild Cat Names

I am annoyed at the use of wildcat names because we use them a lot and we abuse the cats a lot. There is a kind of symmetry in our attitude towards wildcats but it is an unhealthy symmetry.

Examples are:
  • Puma (shoes)
  • Jaguar (cars)
  • Tiger (airline)
  • Tiger (Woods)
  • Bobcat (industrial machinery)
  • Wildcat (numerous sports teams)
  • Lion (software - Apple)
  • Snow leopard (Apple software)
There are countless more examples. Today (3rd December 2011), if you Google search using Google.com for "leopard" at the top is Apple software! Second is Wikipedia on the cat. Point made.

If you search for any mainstream wildcat you will find products and cats. If you use Google.com to search the news for "wildcat" you can forget about news on the cats! All you get is American sports team news.

Naming products after cats is fine as it shows that we admire the qualities of these magnificent animals. We should treat them well in the wild. We owe that to them.

We are gradually destroying the wild cat species in the wild. We are users.

Top Cat Breeds for Allergies

The best hypoallergenic cat breed is probably the Savannah cat, yet this cat breed is not mentioned by Catster.com. The Savannah is the Life Style Pets Inc. Ashera GD and that company sell their cats on the basis that their cats are hypoallergenic. OK, we need not believe everything they say but there is far too many claims made about hypoallergenic cat breeds that are unsubstantiated. There is no hard evidence that any of the breeds mentioned are hypoallergenic.

Some people are allergic to the Fel D1 protein in the cat's saliva. When the cat licks himself he deposits this allergen on his fur. It dries and then enters the atmosphere. So the allergen is floating around and on surfaces as well as on the cat's fur.

On that basis it is probably fair to say that cats that are low shedding may produce less of an allergic reaction in people as there will be less of the allergen in the room. However if you touch these cats the allergic effect will be same as any other cat. Low shedding cat breeds are the rexed cats: Devon Rex, Cornish Rex and LaPerm. There are other rexed cats incidentally.

The Siberian cat breed is consistently said to be hypoallergenic but I disagree. Please read this information.

Catster.com also say that single coated cats with close lying fur are more likely to be hypoallergenic. I am not sure that this is true. They say that a cat will deposit less saliva on the fur of a single coated cat (as there is less fur) and therefore there is less of the Fel D1 allergen to fly off into the atmosphere. Well, you decide for yourselves. I think these cats will have the same amount of the allergen on their fur. These cats are the Oriental Shorthair, Siamese and Javanese. Catster.com mentions the Oriental Shorthair but not the Siamese. They are the same cat so this cannot be correct.

Catster.com also says that the hairless Sphynx is a top cat breed for allergies. This is probably based on the fact that these cats have little hair (downy hair). But if these cats lick their bodies in the same way as cats with hair the saliva will dry and fly off. They may be worse for allergic reactions for all we know. It is a claim that people should not make without some sort of science to support it as it will mislead people. Incidentally, if the Sphynx is mentioned the Don Sphynx should be as well and the semi-hairless cats should  too (e.g. Peterbald).

The truth is that some individual cats are better than others and this is irrespective of the cat being purebred or random bred. Some cats naturally have lower acting Fel D1 allergen and also neutered males and females are probably less likely to produce the allergen.

As to black cat being somewhat hypoallergenic, I have never heard of that and there is no evidence to support it.

One last point. "Hypoallergenic" means less likely to cause an allergic reaction. A cat breed that is claimed to be hypoallergenic is not a cat that does not cause an allergic reaction. It is just less of an allergic reaction, maybe.

Himalayan Cat Personality

Most Himalayan cats are laid back and undemanding. They are generally happiest lounging around. That is why they are sometimes referred to a cat furniture. But to be realistic, you have to factor in individual cat characteristics as well. Not all cats of a certain breed possess the same personality traits.

Also we should recognise that the Himalayan is a pointed Persian and therefore when describing Himalayan cat personality we are also describing the personality of the Persian and the Exotic Shorthair (a shorthaired Persian).

These three cat breeds are not designed to be the most agile of all the cat breeds as they are cobby and have short, heavy boned legs. The Himalayan likes to feel secure in their environment and so can be a little nervous. I hope that is a fair comment. Ideally you need to provide them with routine and a feeling of serenity and security4.

Persians are considered to be relatively quiet and inactive, docile and gentle. They adjust well to new surroundings, it is said.1

Dr. Fogle describes the Himalayan cat personality as calm and friendly.3

All the above traits are confirmed by Dr Ross Clarke who also says that this cat breed is playful and undemanding.2

You can see the extreme breeding in the photograph of the modern Himalayan on this page. It is not unreasonable to presume that this unnatural head shape causes some discomfort sometimes, which in turn may have a negative impact on the Himalayan cat personality.
